«Hi Iris (name known to the editors)! Welcome, my name is Dave (the name may vary) …» — that's roughly how we greet our clients at Iris Foto Schweiz. Whether you're 15 or 65 — we're on a first-name basis. Always. Why? You'll find out in today's piece.

The photographer (or know-it-all) in me starts to wonder: why would I hang images by other photographers on my walls? Who does that? Then the normal human part of me brings me back: why would our clients know my trade as well as I do?

Take a seat, make yourself comfortable … let's talk about iris 👁️

Opening lines I like to use: «What do you actually know about the iris? What is the iris's job? Why are you — or why are you all — here?»

I try to share information about the iris with my guests in a humorous way. Whether it's the iris's function — or what the word «iris» even means. I can reference the Duden dictionary on this: iris comes from ancient Greek and means «rainbow», or literally «rainbow skin». I find that a beautiful label — the rainbow standing for all the gorgeous colours within our iris.

It continues with things like: even though we've just met, I can tell you the eye colour of your parents and even your grandparents. And plenty more.

Yes 🤟🏻 — you can also condense it to 30 minutes … depending on how likeable ehmm interested you all are 😜. And to loop back to why we're all on a first-name basis: if we're already getting this close during iris photography, we might as well keep it personal and use first names, right?

We're completely opposed to «Hi. Sit down. Photo. What size? Thanks, bye, cheers!» The iris deserves to be more than just pretty — and a photo.

Every iris is unique — so let's celebrate that together and have a good time. Sure, you won't remember every detail, but the image will stay with you for life. And to stay true to myself, one more small metaphor: «Wine tastes better when you know the winemaker.»
